Our History
The Mission of St Andrew’s United Parish is to portray to all the transforming love of God as revealed by Jesus Christ according to the Scriptures and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
The initial St. Andrew's Church was constructed in February 1867 in Hokitika, following the arrival of the first minister, Reverend John Gow, to the Hokitika parish. The structure, made of wood, featured a prominent spire and was situated on Stafford Street.
By 1919, the St. Andrew's congregation opted to erect a new church called the Scot's Memorial Church. This initiative aimed to honor Westland Scots who had perished in World War I and to present a tribute to God for the triumph of the Allies. Although the ground-breaking event took place on Peace Day in 1919, the church was ultimately built on a different location.
The services of an architect were not engaged until 1931, when Roy Lovell-Smith finalized the design. Delays ensued due to site selection and financial challenges. Tenders were finally solicited in January 1935, and a month later, J.O. Grant of Christchurch secured the contract with a bid of £2,450. The church's official unveiling occurred on November 24, 1935, with a total expenditure slightly surpassing £2,540.
The original 1867 church edifice served as a Sunday School until its demolition in 1946. A booklet recounting the church's history was published in 1941 to commemorate its 75th anniversary.
In 1970, the Presbyterian St. Andrew's Church merged with the Methodist church to establish the St. Andrew's United Parish.
